6th Generation, hands down, no contest. The combination of my (ex)Dreamcast collection and current PS2 collection beats out everything else I had ever (which admittedly wasn't much).
Zero_DestinyMarch 18, 2011
lol ex-Dreamcast. That got a laugh out of me. I hope you can one day find all those old games again or at least be able to get some of the ones you want to replay on the Xbox Arcade or PSN.
Yusaku_Matsuda70sMarch 19, 2011
I know right. But I bought a Dreamcast at a time when it was dying and gave it away while it was still under-appreciated. Hence I bought the games for real cheap (Soul Calibur for $9, Skies of Arcadia for $19), and gave them away not considering their true worth (priceless). One day, man, one day...
PSN would be great but these first batch of DC games Sega threw out aren't so encouraging (GC port for Sonic Adv, Crazy Taxi without Offspring soundtrack?!). I'd give up my ability to speak if I could play the Capcom 3D fighting trio again not ported to any console since: Tech Romancer, Project Justice, and Powerstone 2 (PSP is not a console, it's a portable) .
Eh... I'd have to go with the PS2 generation due to the quantity and quality of JRPGs (among other things), but SNES generation would have to be a close second. So many classics like FF6, Earthbound, Super Mario Bros RPG, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, etc.
I think the 16 bit era is when developers really got the hang of the art of making games, you'll find a lot of fun stuff on the 8-bit era but also a lot of archaic design choices like long passwords (or no pass/save system whatsoever), confusing UIs etc. The good SNES games have aged a lot better. There's a reason why people still worship Chrono Trigger and FF6, and why Konami is still riffing on Super Metroid with its handheld Castlevania titles.
Zero_DestinyMarch 18, 2011
I wish Konami would rip Metroid off a little more personally. I'm not really a fan of all the 3-D Catlevania games. lol Final Fantasy VI was the peak of all the Final Fantasies (if you ask me) and Chrono Trigger had the dream team behind that one so of course it'll be awesome. :D Though I maybe crazy for saying it but I atcually like Cross better. *prepares to be stoned for his insolence* lol The 16-bit games definitely have held up well. If not they wouldn't of gotten my attention. Good stuff. :)
SolidusSnakeMarch 19, 2011
I liked Chrono Cross, the gameplay was kinda bland and there were too many pointless characters, but the mind screw story was pretty awesome, even if it wasn't the spiritual successor to Chrono that many wanted. The ending pissed me off though -- well, at least the first ending I got after beating the end boss -- Credits roll with a chick walking down a train track?! WTF! Man what trollishness. I haven't played Lords of Shadow yet but I heard it was pretty good. It has Kojima's name on it so I'm willing to bet that it delivers, unlike the other 3D Castlevanias which I admit were terrible. Metroidvania was actually getting kinda tiresome to me until Konami came out with Order of Ecclesia and blew my mind. That game is truly god-tier metroidvania, right up there with Symphony of the Night and Circle of the Moon.
Zero_DestinyMarch 19, 2011
Well if you got the true end of Cross by unleashing the power of the Chrono Cross on the Time Devour it shows a girl walking around Tokyo (via camera with real life actors) said girl is suppose to be Kidd. She's ended up searching all the parallel worlds for Serge and was looking for him in our world. I got that ending first and I really like it. Kinda of bittersweet how time corrects itself and separates the two. A great game. Loved the battle system it was so much fun (I think it was at least). Such a wonderful soundtrack and a great story all around.
Started gaming properly in the 5th gen, and was working backwards (and forwards!) since then. I'd have to say the 6th is my favourite since the bulk of games that I have were on the PS2.
DaiRaiohMarch 18, 2011
I have to say that's a bit confusing as the sixth one starts 1998, while the fifth goes on till 2006, both of them have the PS2, though as the PS1 is only in the fifth generation I would probably stick with that nonetheless.
I'm assuming Zero's including the dreamcast, hence the 1998 start. The PS1 did live quite long and the PS2's not dead yet. Damn, that thing's so persistent!
Zero_DestinyMarch 18, 2011
The date start when a console is made and don't stop until there hasn't been a game made for it . That's why technically the 6th gen is still going on even though we're so knee-deep into the 7th. I got my dates from wikipedia so if you want to complain take it here:[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_vide..._%28first_generation%29] lol Sorry if it's a little confusing. There are a lot of little unknown consoles that start each gen back in the day like the 3DO starting the 5th gen
DaiRaiohMarch 18, 2011
Lol, no it's ok, in that case I love both generations the same! xD I have enough love for every gen!! <3
SolidusSnakeMarch 18, 2011
The day Gamestop quits selling PS2 games is the day I go spend all my money on 12 gauge shells, for the end will truly be nigh.
Yusaku_Matsuda70sMarch 19, 2011
@Ashgail What? The PS2 isn't dead yet? Is it still in production? Are there still games coming out for it?
@SolidusSnake I livelihood also depends on cheap PS2 games that can be had for less than $20 apiece. I'll join you and bring a ton of RPGs... the explosive kind.
AshgailMarch 20, 2011
@yusaku : yup. It's still alive and breathing, although it's definitely aged. One of the rumours saying why Sony removed BC on PS3 is because the PS2 is still selling. http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2 It's surprising that games are still made on that console ^_^'
The third and fourth were probably the most impactful generations in my life, so they take the top vote. I started to play in that generation and every game I played that time has a lifelong place in my gamer heart! :D I have to say though that I am amazingly happy with todays generation of games, they look more and more amazing, the gameplay is great and all the new ideas implemented in the games are super enjoyful. :P
DaiRaiohMarch 18, 2011
Ah, the fifth generation with the Sony consoles, which started a revolution, they were really great too, the PS2 is still my most used gaming console. :D
The third, forth and fifth will probably always be my favorites. So many great games were made. Plus those were the games I played when I was younger. Be it hand-me-downs or the new thing at that time. I too am pretty happy with the recent years. I don't know if it can ever compare to the older ones (but I may be guilty of suffering from Nostalgia) but I don't have any complaints and I think all the new innovations made to how we play games and what we do in games deserves applause. Also I still actively play my PS2. I played it just a couple of hours ago. lol
DaiRaiohMarch 18, 2011
Agree, these old games may not age well, but they were the absolute fun at their time and I actually could enjoy games a lot more at that time too, just playing for the fun of it, without thinking too much about what's going on and the risks of spoilers. xd
RupanIIIMarch 20, 2011
3-5 are also my favorites. Part of it is nostalgia, sure, but I think the fact that I still play and enjoy games from those generations (even more than new stuff) means there's more to it than just that. I can kinda tell when it's the nostalgia talking. Like, my friend bought Garfield & Friends on DVD and said it wasn't as good as he remembered it, but he liked it anyway- more nostalgia side of things. But we watched Pinky & the Brain, and it was every bit as enjoyable as it ever was. Anyway, I think there's potential in all the tech advances and power, but I also think that along the way the industry has lost sight of the fact that less is often more. Just generalizing of course, but a lot of the stuff from this generation looks dazzling, but for me personally, I don't find myself getting hooked into the gameplay side as much as the past classics, and so I too don't think the new stuff will ever compare
Alright my first poll. Please keep in mind that this isn't a console war and you can like a lot of different games from different consoles of a gen. Also I don't mean anything by the pic's I choose. I tried to be fair and used most of the more well known companies all at least once. Sorry if a gen of gaming that you like is represented by a console you don't like. But don't think anything of it.
It's edited now!!! Ha take that fools. Plus listen to Raioh I swear that's the reason. lol
AshgailMarch 18, 2011
^_^' oh dear
SolidusSnakeMarch 18, 2011
Also misspelled fourth as forth >_<
Yusaku_Matsuda70sMarch 18, 2011
Change sixith to sexieth. Because it's true and the right thing to do. ;) Also good first poll. Something everyone can relate to. Though I don't think many of us owned first or even second generation systems. XD
Zero_DestinyMarch 18, 2011
I swear it's not like I can't spell if the spell check isn't on lol
SolidusSnakeMarch 18, 2011
lol it's ok Z_D *pats head* it really is a good poll, I like this topic. @yusaku: Not even I'm old enough to have either of those systems, but my grandfather had an Atari. The weird thing is, he was this old farmer dood so I can't imagine how or why he wound up with the thing. It was a lot of fun to play though, lots of simple, pleasant games, similar to what you'd find at an arcade in those days.
Zero_DestinyMarch 18, 2011
lol My parents had an Atari and one day I pulled it out of the attic (or maybe it was the crawl space) and played it with my bro. I like the Atari. Fun stuff. Nothing special and so many of the games are just awful but it has a lot of fun little gems. And it has Custer's Revenge. The best pornographic game ever made. lol Look it up and be offended, especially if your Native American. lol
RupanIIIMarch 20, 2011
I remember reading about Custer's Revenge in an old EGM article about the worst games ever made. You rape Native women who are tied to cacti, right? What the hell were they thinking lol Sounds more like a recent, messed-up H-game than something for the 2600
Zero_DestinyMarch 20, 2011
@RupanIII there are even more porn games for the Atari Like Beat'em and Eat'em Which pretty much is what it sound like. Eewww Gross >_< I don't know why but people in the 70's we're all pervs lol Anyways yeah the Atari had porn games. They would be hidden behind counters and you'd have to be 18 to ask the clerk for them at stores. They came in big leather cases with no cover-art too so as to hide it's shame. lol Nothing like disguising your porn video game as a leather bound book. XD
